Greek Cafes & Milk Bars of Australia

Documentary photographer Effy Alexakis and historian Leonard Janiszewski have been researching the Greek-Australian presence in both Australia and Greece since 1982.

Their project and archive, In Their Own Image: Greek-Australians, is based at Macquarie University, Sydney, and is one of the most significant collections of its kind in the country.

Their latest book, Greek Cafes & Milk Bars of Australia, has seen Leonard touring around the country sharing research and memories with audiences, many of whom can still remember when every country town boasted a Greek cafe or milk bar, open all hours, 7 days a week.

Come to the library for a fascinating glimpse into Australia’s past, and discover how profoundly two cultures have influenced one another, to shape much of Australia today. Also, rest assured, Wagga: Lex Marinos’ grandfather’s famous Bridge Cafe is featured in the publication.
