- The Riverina Job Challenge is in its second week and with four days remaining has already surpassed its target 200 new jobs.

- The Wagga Community will bid farewell later this month to well-known couple, Tony and Pat Quinlivan who are relocating to the South Coast.

- Red Cross Regional Manager, Shirley Dobson presented TAFE building and construction students with certificates in recognition of the work carried out by them on Wagga’s new Red Cross building.

- Riverina Institute of TAFE teacher, Ricky Smith was presented with the Minister’s Award for Excellence in Teaching 2000 by NSW Education Minister John Aquilina.

- Mayor, Kevin Wales welcomed a goodwill delegation from Wagga’s sister city of Kunming at a Civic Reception.

- Wagga Quota Club president, Lyn Gibbs, is pictured admiring a japonica bloom entered by Joy Smith which was winner of the most outstanding bloom at the club’s annual camelia show.

- Wagga Leagues Club is beginning its search for a new general manager to succeed long-serving Bruce Piercy who has indicated that he will be retiring when his current two-year contract expires next year.

- The Olympic Torch Relay is underway with torch bearers, Brigette Crawford and Doug Sutton pictured at Wagga Motors with Wagga Motors joint managing directors, Gordon and John Braid.

- South Wagga Women’s Bowling Club won the Women’s Bowling Association No.2 pennant at the statewide finals held in Sydney.

- Wagga Doctor and Tumut landowner, Bimal Aichroy paid the top price of $900 for Angus cows and calves at the Early Spring Special Breeders Sale at Adelong.

- Wagga’s Fossey’s store manager, Steve Unwin, is preparing for the rebadging of the store to Target Country.

- Marie Wood is pictured at the Sturt Mall raising funds for Daffodil Day which raises funds for Cancer Council programmes.

- Garry Bazzacco representing NSW Masons presented a cheque for $5000 to Camp Quality Southern NSW treasurer, Gerard Madden to be used to assist children with cancer to attend camps.
- Local police have seized more than $125,000 in drugs over the past few days in two separate drug busts.
- Hospital Health Service director, Doctor Joe McGirr said that suggestions that there have been significant hospital bed closures are unfounded.
50 Years Ago

- Mike Chamberlain has been made a life member of South Wagga Apex. He is the second member to receive the honour with the first being John Caspers.

- Wagga and District Scout Commissioner for the past 2½ years, Peter Hains has stood down and the new Commissioner is Ray Morgan.

- Ricks Jeans and Sportswear now has a special tee-shirt printer which can print any of more than 200 designs in a matter of minutes.

- Lawn bowlers, Laurie Parmenter and Chris Pini of Wagga RSL won the final of the Wagga and District State Pairs in a play off with Charlie Horsley and Noel Townsend from Wagga City.

- Wagga’s ambitious $85,000 greyhound racing complex at the Wagga Showgrounds was opened by Member for Wagga, Mr Wal Fife.

- Huthwaites are selling Ovaltine, 14 oz for 63 cents, Ume Frankfurts, 1lb for 49 cents and Frozen Green Peas, 500g for 39 cents.
- A young cyclist has died following an accident nearly two weeks ago at the intersection of Trail and Kincaid Streets. The accident was the second fatal accident to take place at that intersection in 12 days.
- Wagga Chamber of Commerce president, Graham Irons, said that this week’s Federal Budget did very little to stimulate confidence by the private sector.
- Alderman Pat Brassil, president of the Wagga branch of the ALP has gained ALP nomination for the seat of Farrer at the next Federal election.
- Belinda Paul and Jenny Blight were part of the NSW open Schoolgirls hockey team which beat Queensland in three tests played last week.
- Wagga City wound up a big year in Rugby Union with a 22-6 victory over Cootamundra at the Cricket Ground
- At the end of July there were 1238 jobless in Wagga, 1213 in Albury and 1623 in Dubbo.
- Ald N F McLennan was re-elected unopposed as Wagga Cricket Association president. Brian Lawrence and Bill Inglis were re-appointed secretary and treasurer respectively.
- The price of a middy of beer is rising 5 cents to 33 cents which president of the Wagga Hotels Association Eric Sullivan says is the most severe price rise in the last 50 years and not wanted by hoteliers.
- The Wagga Drama Festival opened this week with first two entries from the host group the Wagga School of Arts.
- Wagga Birthright group was chartered this week with president, Geoff Hull, secretary, Paul Rafferty, treasurer, Ray Rootes and assistant treasurer, Eric Mumford.
- More than 70 birds were entered in the Riverina Pigeon Society Show at the Wagga Show grounds.
