- More than 50 years of service to rugby league was recalled when Ray Plum who played for Borambola in 1937 celebrated his 80th birthday.

- A small group of about twenty people walked from the corner of Baylis and Edward streets to the Victory Memorial Gardens to raise AIDS awareness.

- Wagga Wagga Writers president Tony Dunn and administrator, Ros Bradley launched a new book titled four W eleven at the Wagga City Library.

- Geoff Drummond has been appointed Wagga Leagues Club general manager succeeding Bruce Piercy who recently announced his retirement after 20 years with the club.

- Stuart Davis is pictured with the Australian Sports Medal and certificate commemorating his service to rugby union over more than 40 years.

- RBA Governor, Ian MacFarlane is visiting Wagga for a meeting with parliamentary committee members.


- Buyers from as far away as Queensland and Victoria converged on the Wagga Livestock Marketing Centre with 4640 head of cattle sold for more than $2.6 million.

- Wagga City Councillor, Peter Dale branded the placement of two bronze dedication plaques on the side of the Gobbagombalin Bridge where nobody could see them as an insult to the people who worked so hard to make the bridge a reality.

- Foxtrot Dance Studio students Leah Christoff and Jake Phillips experienced great success at the recent East Coast Classic Championships held at the Sydney Town Hall.

- Wagga diver Emma Goodwin earned a shot at the national diving championships in Perth next year.

- Riverina Anglican College students, Kate Clark, Huw Perkin, Kevin Pettit, Mark Chisholm and Emma Burton are pictured inspecting the second stage of construction of their school.

- Wagga Bureau of Meteorology office in charge, John Darnley is pictured with the bureau’s new radar network internet site and the bureau’s annual calendar both launched this week.
- Wagga was judged the third tidiest town in the state, placed behind Dubbo and Bathurst in the 10,000-plus category in the Keep Australia Beautiful Tidy Towns awards held in Tamworth.
- Wagga’s Drink Link bus is back on the streets for this year’s party season.
- Head of Campus, Professor David Green said that inquiries are continuing into a university prank in which an alpaca was taken from a CSU paddock and locked in the bedroom of a nearby cottage.
- The speed limit in Wagga’s central business district dropped from 60 kilometres an hour to 50 kilometres an hour.
- An explosive debate on where future Wagga City Council meetings should be held was temporarily defused when a motion calling for a return to the “historic council chambers” was ruled out of order.
50 Years Ago


- A crowd of 6,000 people saw Miss Wagga 1975-76, Judy Bourne and Charity Queen, Julie Hamilton crowned at the Apex Carnival at the Eric Weissel Oval followed by the Miss Wagga Presentation Ball at the Wagga Leagues Club.

- The by-election for the seat of Wagga this week has set a new N.S.W. record for the number of postal votes being used, totalling about 6.3 per cent of eligible voters.

- Riverina Primary School softball reached a peak last week when a representative team won the N.S.W. championships at Singleton with Tanya Lehmann, Karen Hatwell, Jenny Parr, Sandra Burdett and Deidre Barnes gaining selection in the State side to tour Queensland in January.

- Rowland Evans representing South Wagga Lions Club presented a one-ton van to Brian Privett representing Waratah Industries.

- Mr and Mrs Athol Thomas celebrated their Silver Wedding Anniversary and were guests of honour at a family dinner party at the Zebra Club Colonial Room.

- Mr Dick Warhurst was presented with an inscribed gold watch when he announced his retirement after driving the school bus from Lockhart to Wagga for almost 23 years.

- Nearly 200 people attended the 25th anniversary of the Wagga Catholic Men’s Dinner Club in the auditorium at the Wagga Commercial Club. Guest speaker was Bishop of Wagga, Dr F P Carroll.

- Wagga’s major Protestant denominations have opened a non-profit book shop in Wagga in conjunction with the Christian Literature Crusade.

- Cyril Sweeney in Dobney Avenue is advertising upholstering of kitchen chairs, TV chairs, bed settees and lounge suites.

- Riverina Paint Supply in Tompson Street are advertising prepasted wallpaper for $1 per roll.

- Maples have 20% off air coolers which are priced from $145.
- Some Wagga City Council aldermen accused the Mayor, Ald Dick Gorman of promoting council as a “one man band”. Aldermen Alan Collins, Charles Houen, Norm McLennan, Bruce Hedditch and Harold Fife all indicated they believed the mayor should keep politics apart from council.
- Peter Hains, acting public relations officer of the Wagga Wildlife and Conservation Society said that the inaugural meeting of the society will be held in December.
- Bus fares have increased by 10% and additional services will now be operated by the Fearne company to Kooringal, Lake Albert and Ashmont.
- John Smith and Tracey Smith were awarded the P and C prize for School leadership at the Wagga High School speech night held in the school’s auditorium.
- John Meagher’s Department Store in Wagga will open a supermarket department early next year which will be twice the size of the one previously conducted by Edmonson’s.
- The Wagga and District branch of the Field and Game Association is campaigning for more active members.
