- A large crowd flocked to Kapooka Soccer Oval to witness a Beating of the Retreat Parade and Concert Spectacular marking the Army Centenary and coinciding with the 50th Anniversary of the death of Wagga-born Field Marshal Sir Thomas Blamey.

- 2WG General Manager, Yvonne Braid and Kurrajong Waratah, Chief Executive Officer, Stephen Jaques, announced that this year’s Wagga Christmas Spectacular would be held at the Wagga Music Bowl on 19th December.

- The Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal raised almost $2000 last weekend.

- “The Peppers”, a controversial drug rehabilitation Centre in Lake Road, was blessed by Father Wilf Plunkett and is expected to take in its first residents next week.

- Sarah Seaman, Karla Seaman and Danielle Jaques are pictured attending the Kurrajong Waratah race day.

- Member for Riverina, Kay Hull, is pictured presenting a veteran partnering certificate recognising Calvary Hospital’s commitment to quality care for veterans to Calvary Hospital’s chief executive officer, Ted Coupe.

- More than 40 members of the Veerhuis family attended a reunion to celebrate the family’s arrival in Australia from Hilversum, The Netherlands, 50 years ago.

- Don Kendell was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship by Rotary District Governor Ray King, on behalf of Kooringal Rotary Club.

- About 45 small business operators gathered at Wagga Leagues Club for the Wagga Business Enterprise Centre’s breakfast with David Koch.

- About 100 cyclists will compete this weekend for the Sid Demmery Memorial, which honours the grandfather of star Wagga cyclist, Josh Collingwood.

- Popular entertainer and former Wagga resident, Darren Coggan, has been cast in a new production of the popular musical Grease.

- Senator Bill Heffernan and Member for Hume, Alby Schultz, are fully supporting the candidate for Farrer, Sussan Ley.

- Wagga’s David Yap wants to see Wagga become the City of a Million Roses, saying that this would set the city apart and make it a popular tourist attraction.
- Wagga City Council gave top priority to an upgrade of the Fernleigh Road level crossing.
- Wagga City Council agreed to relocate the Wagga Sporting Hall of Fame to the Willans Hill site of the Museum of the Riverina, which will reopen on Sept 21 after major renovations.
- Family History expert, Dorothy Fellows, will conduct free lessons on research techniques for beginners at the Historic Council Chambers during June and August.
- Wagga rates are set to rise 2.8 percent but a proposed additional levy to raise $500,000 for environmental projects has been resoundingly rejected by the Wagga City Council’s estimates committee.
50 Years Ago

- About 500 people attended the official opening ceremony of the $7 million extensions to the Wagga Abattoir.

- The Christian Brothers Old Boys Association are having a SMOKO on Friday at the St Joseph’s Hall Library.

- Dental Assistant, Diana Dore, a keen Magpies supporter, is this week’s Miss Rugby League.

- The Sydney Symphony Orchestra thrilled a capacity house at Hoyts Plaza Theatre.

- Rehearsals are in progress for the Wagga School of Arts production “Cabaret”, which will commence on 16th June at the Civic Theatre.

- Mr Allen Viney, State Member for Wakehurst, who has recently completed a study trip to the United States, was the guest speaker at a luncheon meeting of the Wagga Women’s Branch of the Liberal Party.

- Gwen Oakman from Kooringal won the W G Huthwaite and Daily Advertiser KLM overseas holiday competition.

- G Zardo and Sons in Baylis Street are advertising a superb Louis XV period suite imported from Italy and beautifully upholstered in draylon velvet for $2400.

- Huthwaites are selling Kellogg’s corn flakes, 500g for 52 cents, Letona sliced cling peaches, 29 oz for 42 cents, and Kraft processed cheddar cheese, 250g for 38 cents.
- Wagga City Council eased its restrictions on council officers and will now allow council officers to make statements to the media if they have the permission of the Mayor, Deputy Mayor or Town Clerk.
- The City Council is asking the Department of Main Roads to advance the priority for the construction of the Gobba Bridge.
- Club captain, Mrs Judy Beck, won the 27-hole scratch event at the Wagga Country Club associates’ annual tournament.
- Wagga City Council will attempt to reduce the heavy traffic volume on Lake Albert Road by encouraging motorists to use an alternative access route via Kooringal Road and Hammond Avenue.
- The Wagga branch of the Aid Retarded Persons N.S.W. is employing 26 at its workshop, which has now completed its first year of operation at its new premises in Railway Street.
- Huthwaites department store was cleared of shoppers following a bomb hoax scare.
- Mr Tom Hillis was elected president of the Wagga branch of the Australian-American Association.
- Wagga City Council advised the YMCA Hostel committee that funds from the sale of the hostel to the NOW Ministry should stay in Wagga to provide accommodation for Riverina College students.
- The Rotary Clubs of Wagga and the Wagga Rotaract Club are combining this year to hold a careers night to be held this week at Wagga High School and the Wagga Technical College.
