- Undaunted by reservations from the Roads and Traffic Authority, Wagga City Council is pressing ahead with long-term plans for a southern bypass road for the city.

- New CSU vice-chancellor Professor Ian Goulter has joined forces with Wagga City Council in a bid to convince Premier Bob Carr to establish a biotechnology centre of excellence in Wagga.

- Wagga Base Hospital General Manager, Graeme Sloan, confirmed that elective surgery at the hospital has been halted until more nursing staff can be found.

- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission Binaal Billa regional council chairman, Hewitt Whyman, helped to conduct a smoking ceremony in honour of local Aboriginal leader, Daniel Atkinson, who died last week.

- Wagga witnessed a wave of thefts at the weekend with police attending 11 break-ins and attempted break-ins in little more than 24 hours.

- Chris Mooney, the first regional director of health appointed in New South Wales and former president of the Wagga Ratepayer and Citizens Association, has died at the age of 81.

- Major Patrick Pickett, Kapooka band leader for the past eight years, has been posted to Brisbane.

- More than 3000 people are expected to flock to the Wagga Showgrounds this weekend for the eighth annual Wagga Swap Meet.

- Wagga Mayor Kevin Wales presented Miss Wagga Sally Peacock and Community Princess Mikala Grosse with Wagga merchandise to give away as presents when they travel overseas as ambassadors of the city.

- Adam Norman and Adrian Goold were the first recipients of the Rising Star Award presented at the Wagga Basketball Association’s annual general meeting.

- Wagga businessman, Peter Harrington, will close his successful main street fashion business before starting a new position with Breust’s First National Real Estate.

- Legacy President Murray Aitkens, Patrick Pickett, and Don Paul are pictured attending the Legacy Volunteers Dinner at Legacy House.

- Radio FM 107.1 are seeking more volunteers to host multicultural radio programs.

- Kristy Mohr has been selected in the under 16 New South Wales softball squad.

- Details of more than 500 locations where genetically modified crops are being trialled, including those in Wagga and the Riverina, have been posted on a government website.
- Most Wagga City Councillors have agreed that they made a mistake two weeks ago by not donating to the Murrumbidgee Life Education Centre, and the Council has now agreed to make a $1,000 donation.
- Local charities have again benefited from the “Chips” Henderson Memorial Trust Fund.

- Figures released by the Wagga Licensing District through Sergeant Bruce Piercy showed that the two biggest hotels in Wagga were the Turvey Tavern, which paid $29,896 in licensing fees last year and The Union Club, which paid $26,497. Wagga Leagues Club paid $25,430, Wagga R.S.L. Club paid $16,665, and the Riverina Australian Football Club paid $12,989.

- The Wagga and District Highland Pipe Band have won several awards, including the award for the best drilled band at the recent New South Wales pipe band championships as well as other awards in Orange and the A.C.T.

- Former Prime Minister William McMahon opened a “Forum on Your Future” organised by the Graziers Association of N.S.W at the Riverina College of Advanced Education.

- New President, Brian Andrews, received the official charter from Graeme Clark at the Kooringal Rotary Club Changeover Dinner.

- A four-bedroom ranchette home is being built by members of the South Wagga Lions Club in Alder Road, which will be offered as first prize in the South Wagga Lions-2WG Old Peoples Trust Art Union launched this week.

- Barter’s will open their new restaurant at 143-145 Fitzmaurice Street on Monday 19th July.

- The Wagga Trail Horse Riders Club conducted a successful polocrosse carnival at the grounds of the Riverina Australian Football Club.

- The Mount Austin High School girls’ softball team have won the 1976 State Combined High Schools’ Softball Championship.

- Outgoing South Wagga Lions Club President, John Skipper, handed the Club Charter to new president, Len Hawker at the club’s annual Changeover Dinner.

- Fulham Gardens are advertising Lemons, 3 for 15 cents, Jonathans crisp apples 10 for 39 cents, Carrots, 5lbs for 49 cents and Potatoes 20lbs for $1.96.

- Customers can now pay their S.R.C.C. Electricity Accounts at Huthwaites, main Baylis Street Store as well as the S.R.C.C. office in Johnston Street.
- Sgt Ian Mortimer, Secretary-Supervisor of the Wagga Police-Citizens Boys’ Club, has been transferred to the metropolitan area and will be replaced by Senior Constable Dennis Oke, who has been assistant supervisor at the club for the past 13 months.
- Wagga High School hockey player Belinda Paul has been selected to play in the N.S.W. State side to play Queensland in August.
- A 48-year-old man who it is believed was accidentally gassed in his Wagga home has died at Wagga Base Hospital.
