· Wagga City Alderman, Jim Eldridge walked out of a Council Committee meeting after colleague’s halted debate on the controversial sandwich board issue.
· Life membership of the Wagga Country Club was awarded to Rex Sprake by President, Harold Corben and also to Ruth Kenny who received her award from ladies president, Jo Kay.
· Wagga Education Centre elected its new chairperson, Lawrie Maher who takes over from Lex Bittar, inaugural chairperson since 1974.
· The annual Wagga and District Historical Society Fete with many stalls and working exhibitions was held at the Historical Museum on Willan’s Hill.
· Minister for Education, Dr Terry Metherell announced that the proposed new multi-campus university for rural New South Wales will be named Charles Sturt University. “Bathurst, Albury and Wagga are all situated on rivers explored by Sturt” he said.
· The Wagga Cactus, Succulent and Bromeliad Society held their 10th annual autumn show at the Masonic Hall in Tarcutta Street
50 Years Ago
· Miss June Marie Russell wore a 150 year old string of pearls for the traditional something old for her marriage to Mr Patrick John McDonough at St Michael’s Cathedral.
· RVN Channel 2 Wagga announced the appointment of Mr. Richard Gray as sales manager. Mr Gray entered the radio industry about ten years ago with Station 2GB Sydney as program arranger. He has also gained production experience assisting with many of the Jack Davey Shows.
· Wagga Cycle Club’s 1964 season opened with a 16 mile road race over Malebo Hill. Limit men, Norm Power and Ron Demmery held their lead to fill first and second places with Steve Passlow coming in third.
· Miss Barbara Stroud, an English and History teacher at Wagga High School and member of the Gregadoo Junior Farmers Club has won the NSW State Championship for the Junior Farmers home management project.
· Mr John Taylor will be Marshall of this year’s Anzac Day march at Wagga. He will lead 800 ex-servicemen and women in the march which will start from Station Place.
· Mt Austin High School will hold its first continental (fete) this week at the Kyeamba Smith hall. An estimated £1000 is needed to buy text books for the new school.
· More than 300 boys weighed in and participated in the Saturday morning schoolboys’ knockout carnival held on Saturday.
· The N.S.W. basic wage will rise next month by 2/- for men and 1/6 for women. The new basic wage will be £15/5/- a week for men and £11/9/- a week for women.
