Tom Lennon – Archives Outside

Tom Lennon arrived in Wagga to work as a photo engraver with the short-lived Evening News. Later that year, he moved to The Daily Advertiser as its chief and originally, only photographer, and visually chronicled Wagga and the Riverina until the early 1970s.

In this early photo of Baylis Street, taken from Morrow Street looking south, Great Southern Motors is clearly visible on the left as are several Hotels further along the street.

The footbridge was at the southern end of Trail Street and spanned Wollundry Lagoon. It was removed to make way for Ivan Jack Drive connecting Trail Street to Best Street which was opened to traffic in 1961.

Giltrap’s ‘lorry’ evacuating North Wagga residents during one of the floods in the 1950s. There were several floods in the 1950s, the worst in 1950 (10.13 metres), 1952 (9.45 m) and 1956 (9.58 m) when 1200 North Wagga-ites had to be evacuated.
