On this day, 28 July 1923, construction began on the Sydney Harbour Bridge. In 1912, J. J. C. Bradfield was appointed chief engineer of the bridge project, which also had to include a railway. Plans were completed in 1916 but the advent of WWI delayed implementation until 1922.

A sign at Town Hall station pointing to a World War II air raid shelter has been discovered under layers of paint by workers carrying out upgrades, providing a sobering reminder of the wartime anxiety that gripped Sydney 75 years ago.

To celebrate the opening of the “He belonged to Wagga” exhibition, the Museum of the Riverina has teamed up with the Wagga Wagga City Library to host a three-part touring program from the State Library of New South Wales on Thursday and Friday 7 & 8 August, 2014.
Life Interrupted: Personal Diaries from World War I
From 1918 the State Library of NSW began collecting the WWI stories of soldiers, doctors, nurses, stretcher-bearers and journalists so that future generations would know about their experiences. Life Interrupted remembers those who served — in their own words. Exhibition Open until 21st September.
