He Belonged to Wagga: Free History Week Lecture

Anzac MarchEvery ANZAC Day we remember them. We walk past the monuments in their honour, perhaps even glancing at the names carved in stone. The exhibition He belonged to Wagga: our Anzac story (1914 – 1919) puts a human face to these names. He belonged to Wagga… but who was he?

When Britain declared war on Germany on 4 August 1914, Australian Prime Minister Andrew Fisher famously promised the Mother Country that we would ‘do our bit’ and defend her to the last man and the last shilling.

Wagga men eagerly enlisted. Hear the tales of the men who sought adventure in exotic lands; the men who served out of a sense of duty; the decorated men whose bravado earned them military honours; those who were rejected for service; and those that paid the supreme sacrifice.

Join Curator Michelle Maddison to discover their stories, and how World War I changed the face of Wagga Wagga forever.
