  • The Woodhouse family have purchased Hunters Newsagency from Frank Barrett and Neville Harvey to become only the fifth owners of the business since it was started by American gold miner, W C Hunter in 1866.
  • Holbrook came to a standstill for the funeral of long serving former mayor, Nigel Ross.
  • Ruth Henderson is pictured celebrating her 100th birthday with John Henderson, June Brunskill and Dr Peter Henderson.
  • Michael and Trish Gestier have purchased Wagga’s Healthy life franchise store.
  • Wagga City Council has begun replacing cracked pavers in Baylis Street.
  • The Wagga Chamber of Commerce and Industry dropped a bombshell on its Annual General Meeting recording an overall deficit last year of more than $35,000.
  • Well known Wagga personality and raconteur, Roy Stanley “Bones” Rynehart died at his Gumly Farm this week at the age of 79.
  • Wagga’s new Red Cross building built in Wiradjuri Crescent by TAFE students was officially opened.
  • Wagga Woolworth’s manager, Ros Berry and Commonwealth Bank manager, Brian Sylvester launched the start of Woolworths Ezy Banking in Wagga.
  • About 19 parents attended a meeting convened by Dr Anne Flood, co-ordinator of the Wagga Association of Gifted and Talented Children to consider the special challenges of raising gifted children.

  • Wagga City Council won the most prestigious annual prize in New South Wales local government, the A R Bluett Award, which is awarded to the Council achieving the greatest relative progress in the twelve months ending June 1999.
  • SES Murrumbidgee Division controller, Bryan Short, announced the appointment of Graham Ible as the new SES local controller for Wagga.
  • Police were kept busy on the weekend with several people charged with resisting arrest, offensive language and assault offences.

  • The Member for Wagga and Minister for Transport and Highways, Mr Wal Fife unveiled a plaque with Mayor, Ald Dick Gorman to commemorate the official opening of the Eunony bridge.
  • Mr Fife and Miss Trixie Read, Wagga’s Woman of the Year cut the ribbon to officially mark the opening of the bridge following which members of the Wagga Pony Club filed across the bridge to become the official first users of the bridge.
  • Anti-shoplifting campaigner, Mrs Gillian Feest is pictured with president of the Chamber of Commerce, Mr Graham Irons and vice-president, Mr Gordon Braid following a luncheon at the Wagga R.S.L. Club.

  • Construction of the Creative Arts Centre to cost over $900,000 at the North Campus of the Riverina College of advanced Education is well ahead of schedule.
  • The new health scheme, Medibank opened a public office in the below ground floor at Mates.
  • The first of three new high-powered police cars will be stationed at Tarcutta to be followed by Cootamundra and Young.
  • Rail services ground to a halt throughout the Riverina as members of the Australian Railways union struck for 24 hours.
  • A storm of protest has erupted led by real estate agents and land developers following a special meeting at which Wagga City Council voted six votes to five to concentrate immediate residential growth of the city in a broad area north of the city.
  • All future driving tests in Wagga will be conducted by personnel at the Motor Registry. Wagga Police who in recent years have been conducting up to 50 tests each week will no longer be acting as driving examiners.
  • The Nursing Mother’s Association has 50 members in Wagga who meet monthly at the home of Mrs Judy Gifford.
  • A community bonfire night sponsored the North Wagga Residents Association is being held at the old North Wagga Shearing Depot in Hampden Avenue. Further information is available from Bill Van Wel.
  • President of the Wagga Young Labor Social Club said that with 130 members the Club is the biggest political youth club in the district.
  • A new Housing Commission subdivision with 440 homes in Tolland is expected to be finished by 1977.
