• Santa arrived at Grace Bros on Saturday morning in a 1922 Garford fire engine driven by Brian Horsley.

• Jim Elphick is pictured beside a plaque honouring his name at the opening of the Jim Elphick Tennis Centre on Saturday.

• Former Wagga Mayor, Ron Harris, is pictured paying his respects on Remembrance Day at the Victory Memorial Gardens Cenotaph.

• Toys “R” Us opened on Saturday at 67 Baylis Street.

• Betty Haines and Bernice Powell are pictured looking for gifts at the Children’s Medical Research Institute Christmas Fair held at the Murrumbidgee Turf Club.

• National Trust photographs taken by Wagga women, Jill Morrow and Wendy-Robbin Dobie are on display at the Wagga City Library to mark History Week.

• Lions Club public relations officer, Brian Favero, expressed his disappointment in a decision by St George Bank to join the Commonwealth and NAB banks in declining to sell Lions Christmas Cakes, a major fund raiser by South Wagga Lions Club which helps the blind and orphans.

• Brad Kahlefeldt is back training near his Wagga home after returning from a successful overseas campaign.

• Greg Bannon recently purchased riverboat tour business the “Murrumbidgee Eco Experience” and is looking forward to expanding its potential with construction of an 80-seat restaurant.

• Brother Carl Sherrin and Brother Michael O’Carrigan attended an information evening at the Townhouse to outline current developments in the Christian Brothers ministries, particularly the Edmund Rice Foundation.

• The Riverina Jazz band provided musical entertainment at a jazz picnic held at the Charles Sturt University winery on Sunday.

• Danielle Curtois and Amanda Wheeler have both been chosen in teams to contest national softball titles.

• Local publicans who wagered $50 each on the Melbourne Cup raised $1188 for Camp Quality which was presented to regional manager of Camp Quality, Alan Lean by vice-president of the Australian Hoteliers Association Wagga branch Pat Gurr.

• Husband and wife, Peter and Debbie Jones have taken over as manager and secretary of the South Wagga Sports and Bowling Club.
• Wagga City Council’s Bikeways project has won been a big winner in the 2000 Heart Foundation Local Government Awards.
50 Years Ago

• Wagga insurance underwriter, Doug Hubbard, has been appointed as the new secretary of the Murrumbidgee Turf Club.

• Diana Alexander of Lockhart will take the lead role of Aladdin in the School of Arts Players Christmas production opening soon at the Civic Theatre.

• Dealer Principal of Hillis Ford, Tom Hillis, congratulated spare parts manager, Norm McLennan and his assistant, Terry Rooke who have won Ford Motor Company prizes top sales for top sales in Australia.

• Peter Hains, Rhonda and Joe Schipp, Neil Skeers, Colleen Burns and Mark McEvoy are pictured attending the Second Wagga Scout Group Christmas Party held at Cartwrights Hill.

• The new trampoline section of the Kooringal Sports Centre will be operating by this weekend.
• Mr Herb McPherson MLC, chairman of the Wagga campaign committee for the State seat of Wagga said that the Wagga branch of the Labor Party had waived its membership rules to endorse Dick Gorman as its candidate because he was “a suitable nominee who was known to believe in Labor policies.
• The bed capacity of Wagga Base Hospital would almost double in the Next ten years to 400 according to Mr Leon Punch Minister for Public Works and Ports in Wagga to launch the State election campaign for Mr Ron Hunter, candidate for the seat of Wagga.
• Australia Party candidate for Wagga, Mrs June Sutherland, drew attention to the possibility of blasting in the Malebo Range to ease Wagga’s flood problem.
• Wagga’s population on 13th August 1975 was 32,950 compared with 28,814 in 1971, a growth rate of approximately 3.2% compared to the State average of approximately 1%.
• Bob Martin will be re-elected unopposed at the Wagga Country Club annual meeting on 28th November with retiring vice-presidents, Hugh Hawthorne and Stan Dasey to be opposed by Richard Bowen.
• The Wagga Rescue Club Fete will be held this Saturday with billycart races, marching girls, merry-go-rounds and lots more.
• The Wagga Base Hospital Auxiliary raised more than $1,000 from their annual market day.
• Mr Keith Swan has been elected chairman of a committee which will organise a regional conference of Historical Societies in Wagga next year.
• Humula district residents are endeavouring to float a public company to purchase the A.P.M. timber mill in the town and keep it operating.
• The first round of the nine holes tournament for novice players, sponsored by Apex will be held this week.
