25 Years Ago

- Garry Gaffney who overseas council’s transport and traffic program has completed 25 years of service and was one of 16 employees honoured by the Mayor, Kevin Wales for their many years of service.

- While in recent months attention has been focused on the proposed takeover of Finemore Holdings by Toll Holdings there has also been rationalisation between two smaller Wagga Transport firms with Rodney’s Transport Services headed by managing director, Peter Rodney acquiring Post Transport headed by Ken Post.

- Wagga Livestock Marketing Manager, Kevin Watts said that a meeting would be held this week between buyers, agents and the centre to address concerns that sales are taking too long with buyers threatening to walk out if the Monday cattle sale went beyond 5pm.

- St Michael’s High School principal, Kerry Mowett addressed harassment, cultural diversity and indigenous issues in the school community in his speech night presentation.


- Jim Ligakis and his younger brother, Nick from Wagga business, Crazy Jim’s were special guests at a gala presentation in Melbourne where they were finalists in a major ethnic national business award.


- Several thousand people including Maria and Jenna Coote packed into the Victory Memorial Gardens for the inter Church Carols by Candlelight.

- One of the State’s oldest residents, Tosca Ronning died in Wagga aged 104.

- Nicola Savage was named Kooringal High School Dux, Rachel Dickinson as Sportsperson of the Year and Kristil-Rae Mobbs was presented with the RSL sub-branch prize for citizen of the year at the school’s presentation night held at Joyes Hall.

- Well known Wagga sporting identity Garry Burns confirmed that he had sold the Forest Hill general store, newsagency and Post Office after seven-and-a-half years to Lindsay Gillard.

- There was plenty of Christmas and community spirit for the large crowd attending the Wagga Music bowl Christmas celebrations.

- Sealing of 17 new netball courts has begun at the Wagga Equex Centre.

- Australian women’s water polo hero Yvette Higgins was the special guest at the Riverina Sports Association Blues Dinner.
- Well known Prime Television Wagga and Albury manager, Greg Aplin has been retrenched following restructuring at the network.
- Neighbours of a Lake Albert Road, house earmarked to become a rehabilitation centre for up to 15 detoxicated drug addicts took their concerns to Wagga City Council.
- A man was arrested walking past Wagga Police Station when he was recognised from security footage taken at a holdup of the Lake Road Shell Auto Port.
50 Years Ago

- Mr Wal Fife, the former Member for Wagga has made a successful transition from State to Federal Government with an overwhelming vote in Farrer.

- Toni Murray, one of 60 youngsters taking part in a one-day vacation activity camp, is pictured with archery coach, Bob Jacka, at the Borambola National Fitness Camp.

- Pupils of the Yvonne O’Connor School of Dancing are performing a “Mouse” ballet which is part of the Children’s Theatre Workshop mini play, “The Princess With a Load on Her Mind”.

- Postal workers including Roy Judd are busy ensuring the delivery of Christmas mail and parcels.

- Robbie Robinson is conducting a special course arranged by the N.S.W. Sport and Recreation Service on resuscitation and water safety aimed at home swimming pool owners.

- Mr Tom Searle who has completed 50 years with the Hardy group of companies was presented with a set of bowls by the managing director of the Hardy group, Mr Daven Davis.

- Philip Goldsmith and Keith Roberts will join Graham Lisle, Charles Houen and John Ireland as Principals in the Legal Practice known as Creaghe, Lisle and Houen from 1st January 1976.

- Wagga City Council has produced a six-page colour brochure aimed at women as wives and mothers to promote decentralisation of families to the region.

- The Kooringal Hotel has added a new drive-in bottle department to cater for increased sales at the hotel.

- Keven Geaghan has been honoured with life membership of the N.S.W. Junior Men’s Hockey Association.
- The annual meeting of the Wagga branch of the Australian Association for Better Hearing which saw Doug Dennis elected president and Mavis Taber as vice-president was held at the home of Misses Trixie and Margaret Read.
- The Wagga City Bowling Club has arranged a presentation day for their popular secretary-manager, Horrie Logan who has retired.
- The price of a 600ml bottle and carton of milk will be four cents higher than in Albury following increases approved by the Dairy Industry Prices Tribunal.
- Mr Joe Schipp was officially declared as the new member for Wagga with a final winning margin of 4718 over his nearest rival, Mr Dick Gorman.
- Sally Meech, Paul Comerford, Deane Lillis and Craig Patterson all broke records at the Little Athletics zone championships held at Griffith.
- Members of the Wagga Base Hospital Board have called on N.S.W. Minister for Heath, Mr Dick Healy to intervene in a dispute at the hospital between doctors and Medibank.
