- Wagga City Council has been strongly criticised by Wagga RSL Club manager, Andrew Bell, for not locating the Wagga Sporting Hall of Fame at the Club.
- Charles Sturt University deputy chancellor, Anne Brassil, opened the Quota Art competition and exhibition at Wagga High School.

- Jim and Mavis Elphick celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at the Wagga Leagues Club.

- Leyton Selwyn Joyes, known as Don, who had a 28-year history with Wagga Agriculture College and the Wagga Agriculture Institute, died this week at the age of 83.

- Twenty-year-old Scott Crowley was named the Riverina Umpires’ Association umpire of the Year.

- After 30 years in the music industry, Dale Allison has set up his own business following the purchase of established Wagga business, Harmony House.

- The Mentone’s Men’s Choir, which started in 1955, will say goodbye on a high note with performances next month on three consecutive nights at the Wagga Commercial Club.

- Wagga’s Luke Francis is following his father, Paul, as a race caller at district meetings. Father and son are pictured between races at Cootamundra.

- More than 40 Glenfield Park residents met with the Mayor Kevin Wales, six councillors and two council directors to express a variety of concerns.

- New South Wales Country Women’s Association president, Ruth Shanks, addressed the Riverina group’s 75th annual conference at Collingullie.

- Hazel Anderson was awarded life membership at the conference after 47 years with the CWA Collingullie branch.

- Mount Austin Public School principal, Sandra Clifford and school captains, Jessica Dodds and Joshua Howell, were presented with awards from the Safe School Awards Program 2001.

- Victoria Hotel publican, Andrew Irvine, has bought out his partner, Nick Turner and is looking at expanding his business interests in the city.

- A reunion for the Saint Michael’s Christian Brothers College class of 1952 is being held this weekend with former teachers Brother Brian Sorenson, Brother Paul Denny and Brother Robert Page also attending.

- Hilda Pierce and Cecily Breust are pictured attending an introductory come-and-try day at the Wagga Croquet Club.

- Southern District Racing Association Secretary Ian Reid was bestowed with life membership as he retired after 36 years in the same position.

- President of the Local Government Association of NSW, Councillor Peter Woods is in Wagga as part of a Statewide tour.
50 Years Ago


- 1600 runners surged down Baylis Street at the official start of the Daily Advertiser-2WG City to Lake Run, with Canberra athlete Dave McGuiness scoring his second win, having previously won the event in 1973.

- Judging in the Wagga Beef Cattle Society competition saw Mr and Mrs A’Beckett of the Rock exhibit the champion weight gain steer and the Nowland family from Wanterbadgery exhibit the champion carcass.

- The Sturt Highway deviation at Ashmont has been completed, bringing traffic out onto Edward Street West.

- Wagga’s team consisting of Mark and Chris Gallagher, Peter Reynolds, Darryl Esley, Mike Measday and Merv Murchie won the Bell’s Cup men’s intertown squash premiership for the first time in four years.

- The Sturt Public School kindergarten choir led by senior choir mistress Maureen Flower won the kindergarten song section of the Wagga Eisteddfod.

- The Sturt Public School also won the Sweeney Cup for Juvenile Choirs at the Eisteddfod, with another choir led by senior choir mistress Jan Batt.


- Upholsterer Cyril Sweeney, who has been working in Wagga for 27 years, has moved into new premises at the rear of 126 Tarcutta Street off Bardo Lane.

- Mayoress, Mrs Kate Allen, officially opened the Wagga Combined Charities Christmas Card Shop at Maples store.

- Peppi’s, serving pizza, pancakes and other gastronomical delights on the corner of Forsyth and Peter Streets, is now fully licensed.

- The Federal Minister for Education, Senator John Carrick, will open the New Marian Resources Centre in the grounds of the Bishop Henschke and St. Maria Goretti schools after it is blessed by the Bishop of Wagga, Dr F. P. Carroll.

- The Finance Corporation of Australia is advertising Debentures paying 12.5% per annum for 5 years.

- Maples are selling a complete Sanyo Hi-Fi System for $459 and a National 3-piece modular stereo for $159.

- Huthwaites are selling Sunlight soap 500g for 43 cents, Jiff 375ml for 73 cents and Bananas for 50 cents a dozen.
- Wagga City Council Development Officer, Mr Sibree, reported that Industrial land sales have become a major income earner for the city, as well as offering the prospect of creating 160 new jobs in the next year.
- Brian Duignan, Wagga manager of Lamson Paragon, is the new president of the Wagga Chamber of Commerce, succeeding Graham Irons, who has retired having completed his two-year term.
- Show Society president, Mr John Macrae, said that gate takings and membership for the 1976 Wagga Show were $40,000, the highest ever without rain insurance.
- A tender has been let for the construction of off-street car parking at the Tolland Shopping Centre.
