25 Years Ago

  • Store manager, Adrian Le Loux, said Grace Bros store will now open every Sunday from 10am until 3pm.
  • Seven Riverina people including Farmey Joseph, Wal Fife and Father Michael Burgess all of Wagga were presented with papal awards by Bishop Brennan in a special ceremony at St Michael’s Cathedral.
  • Wagga police praised the cooperation of crowds gathered in the city over Easter including those attending the annual street machine rally held at the showground.
  • Tourism Wagga Wagga has rubbished criticisms by the Wagga Moteliers Association that it is ignoring tourism operators when developing its marketing plans.
  • The occupants of a ski boat which collided with a cement ski ramp at Lake Albert were lucky to escape without serious injury.
  • The Tom and Jerry show is great school holiday entertainment at the Leagues club.
  • Wagga’s Gerry Daly landed the biggest win of his career winning the Australian Veterans, over 35 TK2 canoe title at West Lakes, Adelaide.

  • Wagga is hosting a three-day Local Government Gas Conference with Councils from as far away as Armidale and Kiama attending.
  • Author Bryce Courtenay is in Wagga as part of a tour around Australia.
  • MAC’S Liquor is selling Johnnie Walker Red Label Whiskey 700ml for $23.95 and Victoria Bitter 24 x 375ml stubbies for $22.95.

50 Years Ago

  • The Fernleigh Road – Bourke Street intersection has been branded the “busiest and most dangerous” in Wagga with two people killed and several others injured in recent years.
  • Prominent solicitor Mr William Daniel Coggan who was a committee member of the South West Slopes Law Society who also served on the Murrumbidgee District Ambulance Board and as a former member of both Apex and Rotary Clubs has died at the age of 63.
  • World renowned American ballad singing group, The Platters performed to a packed house at the RSL Club.
  • Wagga’s largest off-street car park, the Golden Square car park at the rear of Edmondson’s, David Jones and the Australian Arcade is nearing completion.
  • President, Dr W A Merrylees said that the annual general meeting of the Riverine University League has been postponed until after a delegation from the League had met State Education Minister Mr C Cutler.
  • Senior postal officer, Tom Musto has retired after 50 years’ service with the post office.
  •  A Wagga nightwatchman was bashed with his own torch when he surprised two intruders at the rear of the Wagga Pawnbroker’s premises in Baylis Street.
  • Twelve-year-old Roger Hunt won $500 in the Cottees soft drink bottle top bonanza promotion which attracted more than 1,000 entries.
  • Ald W C Fife said that the Wagga City Abattoir was in a much worse financial position than last year’s trading loss showed.
  • More than 200 delegates are attending an inter-denominational Christian Women’s Convention in Wagga.
  • Malvern Star Stores are advertising TV rentals from $8.50 per month.
  • A Basset Hound owned by Mrs J Harris won the “Open Bitch Class” at the recent Sydney Royal Show.
  • Industrial Land on the corner of Dobney Avenue and Edward Street will be auctioned soon by Hore & Davies.
