- Rex Graham hopes to provide voters with an alternative to the major parties when he stands as a Democrats candidate for the Federal seat of Riverina at this year’s election.

- An attempt by the Council to improve activity and construct streetscape improvements in Fitzmaurice Street has been welcomed by Romano’s Hotel licensee, Gavin Brown.

- Captains of the four teams vying for the rugby league Hardy Shield, Jemaine Packer (Mt Austin High), Brendan Maher (Trinity Senior High), Matt Talbot (Kooringal High) and Matt Scott (Wagga High) are pictured holding the shield.

- Reverend Tim Costello is the guest speaker at the Wagga Chamber of Commerce and Industry business luncheon this week.

- The late Father Peter O’Leary was farewelled in a pontifical concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial at St. Michael’s Cathedral.

- Kooringal Primary School teacher, Cleve Shaw, is the only male teacher at the school and works alongside about 20 female teachers.

- The Wagga Eisteddfod Committee, including Jill Tucker, Sylvia Connell, Cheryl Hyland, Beryl Peacock and Deborah Chamberlain, is pictured following a meeting that saw several new volunteers join the committee and Mikala Grosse appointed as speech convenor for this year’s eisteddfod.

- Bredin’s Newsagency in the Sturt Mall was one of six finalists out of a field of about 1200 newsagents in an annual awards night held in Sydney.

- As part of a statewide tour, New South Wales ombudsman Bruce Barbour visited Wagga to discuss relevant issues with concerned residents.

- Jade Williams, a highly skilled rugby league and Australian football player, emerged from the St Michael’s Regional High School athletics carnival eclipsing a javelin throwing mark set 28 years ago and being crowned as the school’s 15-year age champion.

- A crowd of about 200 people attended a two-day boys’ conference at Wagga Leagues Club, which was addressed by leading child psychologist and parent, Dr John Irvine.

- The Real Estate Institute of New South Wales, Riverina division, presented a cheque for $12,000 to the radiotherapy appeal.

- Woolworths has abandoned plans for a second Plus Petrol service station in Johnston Street, and the site will now be converted to more car parking at the Northside complex.
- Rural Fire Service control officer, Joe Knox, said fires reported at Uranquinty, Gregadoo range, Bullock Hill near Mangoplah and Big Springs had all started from lightning strikes.
- Wagga City Council has widened its chemical collection program to include chemicals from all sections of the community.
- New Wagga business, Hardwarehouse, is the first to take possession of its store and begin an extensive fit-out at the new HomeBase bulky goods centre.
50 Years Ago

- Don Smith, Paul Bank and Reg Whitelaw are pictured on the rubber raft they will man in the Central Wagga Lions Club “Guni” race to be staged later this month.

- Kylie Trevanion was the girls’ champion, and Andrew Moore was the boys’ champion in the under six months section at the St Aidan’s Fete.


- Marching girls added a touch of colour to the Apex Club, Wagga Gift carnival at Weissel Oval. Graham Dobie won the 400m Wagga Gift in 46.8 seconds, winning $600.

- A low-key opening was held for the first stage of the Tarcutta Street underpass.

- Lockhart Shire President, Cr P J Amery, presented a certificate of merit to Cr Ollie Ingrey, who has served on Lockhart Council for 15 years, six as president.


- School Chaplain, Rev. Fr. G Iverson, blessed and presented captains’ badges to St. Michael’s Regional High School captain, Ricky Swaysland and vice-captain, Anthony Gaynor.

- Mr Joe Mason-Cox, president of the Wagga District Scout Association, presented the District Commissioners Shield to the Coolamon Scout Group after they won the Wagga District swimming carnival for the first time in five years.

- Mr and Mrs Walter Brill of Ganmain celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary.
- A Wagga Wagga Auxiliary of the Asthma Foundation was formed at a meeting held at the home of Mr and Mrs Tony Quinlivan.
- Wagga’s Mayor, Ald Gorman and Ald Pat Brassil are leaving for New Zealand to investigate meat and livestock marketing methods.
- The North Wagga Residents Association has asked all North Wagga residents to defer payment of their rates until the association’s annual general meeting.
- Well-known Wagga Rugby League personality Mr Bob Honeysett suffered first and second degree burns to his right arm when a barbeque exploded on the balcony of the Union Club Hotel, of which Mr Honeysett is licensee.
- Principal of the Wagga Technical College, Mr E J Ellis, announced that an extra Stage 1 typewriting class for beginners will start next week.
- Wagga Venturers staged a big clean-up campaign along Captain Cook Drive on Willans Hill.
- The Wagga Boat Club will be presenting a night ski spectacular this week on Lake Albert.
- Wagga and District Men’s Hockey Association is expecting to have at least 20 sides in three grades for this year’s competition.
- The first official polo tournament in 40 years is planned for the Riverina Australian Football Club in April.
